PELVIC HEALTH
SALUD PELVICA
The pelvic floor is a combination of muscles and ligaments that work collectively together during activities of daily life to control functions that are routinely overlooked, like incontinence. Dysfunction within the pelvic floor can be caused by numerous conditions. The pelvic floor, an essential part of the core musculature, can have two primary dysfunctions; either failure to contract properly to maintain stability, or failure to relax causing unnecessary stress through the system. If you are struggling with any of the following, we are here to help: Pelvic Pain, Urinary Incontinence, Postpartum Recovery, Diastasis Recti, Pelvic Floor Weakness / Uterine Prolapse, Low Back Pain, Groin Pain, Sacroiliac Joint
Physical therapy treatment has been determined essential to the care of patients with pelvic floor dysfunction. As found by a randomized controlled trial by British Columbia Women’s Hospital and Health Centre in Vancouver, Canada, after completing a comprehensive course of physical therapy focusing on pelvic health, women were found to have 75% fewer symptoms compared to baseline in 3 months, with improvements in leakage episodes, increased in quality of life, and decreased fall risk.
What can you expect during a pelvic health physical therapy visit
Your physical therapist will provide a thorough and comprehensive evaluation in a private treatment area to review your medical history, current issues, posture alignment, range of motion, strength assessment and determine what your goals for physical therapy are.
*The examination may include an internal pelvic floor muscle exam that will only occur with your consent. The patient will determine if this is part of the treatment or not. Any patient has the option to have another person present in the treatment room with them during the examination and/or subsequent treatment sessions for your comfort.
Various treatment options exist depending on your specific condition. Treatments may include any of the following: education on your condition (prevention/management), pelvic floor retraining electromyography (EMG) biofeedback, motor control exercises, diaphragmatic breathing/relaxation exercises, manual (hands on) therapy, functional pelvic floor muscle training, bladder habit training, dietary recommendations, and written diaries
